The most difficult of the Christian teachings was thus not the existence of God but that of the Incarnation of the Son of God.

"  Put my hand in yours so that it always with you  ".
"Pope Benedict once defined “dialogue” as a delicate balance of speaking and listening that “transforms the being of both interlocutors.”

The biggest revelation that Jesus has given us is the "ABBA"
! Beautiful identity that we are children of God !.
It leads us down the path of life as a child's hand.

Jesus changes the name Yahweh, the God of Israel exclusively, by the FATHER, The God of all men by virtue of being the same.
The person has infinite value because exists to God
By the mysterious presence of Christ the only begotten of the Father in every man. The "monogeneans" (the only begotten), in whose image were created all men.
"All things are yours, you are Christ's and Christ is for God."
May our life be an offering to God that we recognize, love and seek.

" In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told that I will prepare a place? If I go and prepare a place, go back and take you with me, that where I am, you may be also . "
Today Jesus speaks of the heaven and says that there will be many mansions:  . Jesus speaks of the Father's house  We will prepare the house for us, adapted to our truth . Because Jesus is the truth of our life. So prepare a place for everyone. For us to have our space.  An original, adapted our truth.
The mystery of the mercy of God revealed in Christ's sacrifice on the cross:
"That God, rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith He loved us,  being dead for our sins,  made us alive, resurrected us and made us sit together in heaven with Christ. "
Not to succumb to temptations to being self-centered, arrogant, rude, jealous, boastful, irritable, or resentful.
! The Father  loves the Word made flesh, and in Him, and through Him to mankind saved !.  For Your Kindness toward us in Christ who gave himself for us,  we are called to participate fully in the Lord's victory over the sin and death, and that is the wealth of the souls for incorporation into Mi: take their merits, their appearance, their resemblance, until processing and creditors to the love of the Father, that He look tenderly and who loves us with the same Infinite Love that loves Christ, who is the Holy Spirit himself, who is the only love that He can love and who makes heaven).

“Why do Christians exalt the Cross of Christ?” asked Pope Francis of pilgrims and tourists Sunday who had gathered beneath the window of his study to for the midday Angelus.  Because, he told them, that Cross on which Christ was nailed “is the source of the mercy of God that embraces the whole world.” It’s not just any cross, it is the source of our salvation.
we do not exalt just any cross or all crosses: we exalt the Cross of Jesus, because God’s love for humanity was revealed most in it. That's what the Gospel of John reminds us in today's liturgy: "God so loved the world that He gave only begotten Son" (3:16). The Father has "given" the Son to save us, and this has resulted in the death of Jesus and His death on the Cross. Why? Why was the Cross necessary? Because of the gravity of the evil which kept us slaves. The Cross of Jesus expresses both things: all the negative forces of evil, and all of the gentle omnipotence God’s mercy. The Cross would appear to declare Christ’s failure, but in reality marks His victory. On Calvary, those who mocked him said, "If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross" (cf. Mt 27,40). But it was the opposite that was true: it was because Jesus was the Son of God, that He was there, on the Cross, faithful to the end to the loving plan of the Father. And for this reason God has "exalted" Jesus (Philippians 2.9), conferring universal kingship on Him.

The fruit of Jesus' death will be the Spirit.   'death and resurrection of Christ as expansion of the ineffable communion of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit.  The Gift of the Holy Spirit to remind us all things and well must lead us to the Truth full.  The Gift of God is. Don of Dons, the only one able to renew souls and worlds, cleansing them, purifying them, and making reborn in the Holy Spirit.

CHRIST LIVES.

This blog could well be titled "Only Jesus"  because He is everything. The Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.
Also  it could be called " Missionary Jesus "  because He is the 'sent' the Father, promised the Messiah , who had come to this world.
Or could be called " Be Jesus "  for emphasis, his being and personal action, or  rather what He does in us.
BUT IS CALLED CHRIST LIVES because Christ lives in us because  only through him, with him and in him the man reaches his ultimate goal. To know, love and serve God in this life and see it and enjoy it in the other.
Christ is for us the chance to take the world to a completely God incarnate, with a body and a soul of man, without losing his divinity.  contrast: a divine Person takes our flesh. This unparalleled occurs, says St. Paul  , "in the fullness of time", the greatest moment in human evolution.
Jesus' life was a continual participation of everyone's life and human relationships were widespread and intense, how many beautiful things discussed.
His spirit was universal, nothing was strange. His whole being  vibrated   with all the beautiful, the true, the good. Your look penetrates times as I saw the souls and consciences read drew hearts.
His soul is a flame, always glowing red hot by the perpetual  burning  of the divine in the altar of his heart pounding

That is the Christian life,  live children's relationship  in ALL circumstances.
Make the whole life into  full communion with the living God .  Which is  an encounter with the living Jesus and an  encounter with Jesus in others .  demonstrate our love for God by loving all HUMBLE.
That Jesus did live to worshiping the Father and fully implement its Will save, and get to your last result.  teach That does not make Jesus so that gives us His Spirit.

The center of all Christian life must be Christ and the brethren, because if you baptism were consecrated to God in the sacrament of marriage we were also devoted to 'she', our children, and with them their family and friends.

The Holy Spirit, to draw man to God, I act the Incarnate Word, exalting man as direct contact with the Divine and infinite merits earned him my salvation.
"Profession of  faith is not assent to a set of abstract truths , but  make life into full communion with the living God "

So  " CHRIST LIVES "  just wants to:

Show the true face of Jesus Christ crucified and risen, but alive and present in history .  Lord of history and only Redeemer of man.  Winner of sin and death.

Revelation of God in whom we exist, move and have our
and also the revelation of the man himself and the new man created in his likeness

God prepared the building which conducted the Incarnation of her Son  in Christ center and CREATION OF THE CHURCH.   Which continues to act in time and reach its consummation in heaven, s u fullness and joy.

Monstrate full Christ in their priests, the faithful,  in his saints, as if Church militant, but also in its cathartic and triumphant Church, where the mystery of consumed communion between God and his creature :

THE PLAN OF SALVATION FOR FATHER OR N THE WORLD THROUGH THE CROSS OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT EFFUSION.
The giving of oneself to others constitutes the nature of God.
The Incarnation of the Word was eternally for what the Father had in his mind and heart. God is not a thing first and another later, but everything he has been and is being and will be forever.

"This mystery in the Father was not made, but ever done from the beginning without beginning. "
My Father eternally begot me in itself, but also in Maria freak me forever by the power of the Holy Spirit, because this mystery had its material effect on the time, but had its beginning since God is God, that is, eternally.
And the Word became flesh by the Holy Spirit, but with the fertilization of the Father; and my gratitude to him, my desire to repay your love with pain was immense, and I chose the cross, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and the pain died sanctifying it to open heaven , the souls do all mine,  en-loved My Father and My fusing,  to seeing them in my melted by love and by pain, but glorify Him in Mi and Mi, deliver them to the Father loved saved,  to their eternal worship.
In My as Man-God sees my Father all creation in His Word, which is for the mirror in which you look and reflects and unites God to God, and God God-Man contemplates the My joint humanity with humanity , as head of that body, and he, in his most loving gaze, not looking at the creature, but on My creature, himself in Me and the creature.
As Man-God I love the divine and the human, all encompassing love of all men united to Mi , to honor and glorify Him, because only love and praise of men passing through Mi and joins Mi, glorifies the Father.
For this love to a Sacred Humanity, who had come to his time to glorify him as a double title, that of God and of man, of the divine-human love, say, created man in my mortal Image (because in his mind was my most holy body) and the image of the Trinity in his soul.
We have been redeemed to live as brothers and God has raised us to the
dignity of being children, with the Love with which He has created and for which he created us.

THE WILL OF GOD saving FOR ALL MEN

Jesus  has replaced the multiple offerings of the ancient cult of the oblation of his  heart to seek sinners  "new heart ".
His oblation, oblation heart was not in the sense that it was limited to an inner attitude, but in the sense that it is done in the most intimate part of your mood there to extend their full human being, all his sufferings , all his works.
In God there are three distinct persons but there is only one will, one substance, one power ... This Will this mystery and omnipotence am working Incarnation of the Word, with the Holy Spirit assistance,  the Spirit of the Father and Son who produced it.
The substance of the Father's love, and so great man, that he gave his own Son for redemption.
The substance of the Son is love, and so great with the Father and the man who gave Himself to save the pain, and give time to the Father.
The substance of the Holy Spirit is the love and life that communicates. Tie that warms and encourages all three.

The sins of the world falling on Jesu's soul.
In that dark moment of anguish and loneliness, the tender invocation "Abba", which in itself is diminutive, has a very special flavor: the weight of suffering in crisis does not put his faith and obedience.
Imploring Jesus prayed: "Abba," "Father if it is possible let this cup pass Me, but my will but yours be done." And so Jesus learns the reality of human life that is obedience.
Man recognizes Jesus as the entire distance separating creature of the sovereign majesty of God. That is the permanent retention of Jesus in his humanity assumed by the divine. Father, if you want ... if possible ... and Mark emphasizes more the strength of Jesus' request when he says: "Father, for you all is possible, let this cup pass Me but do not do what I want but what You. "Jesus in the prime of life is facing the loss of his life, because as soon ?.
Jesus began praying, and now in the vortex of the test is in prayer that is himself. Jesus had said before: "No one takes me to my life, I give it because I have power to lay it down and take it again (John 10:18)..
Jesus, fully compliant, expresses a desire knowing that it will not be. Jesus asks what are the strength to endure to the last breath in this fidelity to the Father and man.
All the sins of the world fall on Him. Coming to Jesus is not a surprise. All life is prepared for this time. Apparently he is the loser before their enemies to laugh at him.
Before the tests came out. In the Garden, all comes from within. What was your total check option for God.
The human experience of Jesus is more proof that a suffering human existence is not absurd, useless and meaningless.
God is not insensitive to human suffering. Jesus gives us two join as the Letter to the Hebrews tells us, her brothers.
God did not come to explain suffering, has come to fill it with his presence.

"Divine love does not relieve us of pain, with us in it." In the Father wants to share Jesus death to exalt life.

The Resurrection of Christ, response sacrificial love of the Father to the Son.
On one hand,  the cross as God's self-revelation on the other, the event of the Cross as  the center of world history , and as an event  of great importance  for every man "
" If my Father gave me a par save suffering humanity and channeling it to heaven was through love and for giving me a splendid crown of glory . "
It was an honor for Me as a Man, give the glory of my submission to His Will, my bloody sacrifice, the sacrifice encouraging me to save the world and found my church that would glorify in time and in eternity.
The resurrected body under that I glorify the flesh with the pure touch of my Divinity.

Because I crucify my Father and his Eternal Will ?.
The Father has loved me, like no one loved her ... My love is, above all, love ... and yet crucify me.
? As conceived, that the Father sacrificed His only Son, more beloved than anyone  in favor of your other children , your children are alone for the existence of this unique and eternal Son ?.
Back in eternity my crucifixion was reflected in the Godhead, in the Person of the Father in His Word, who is one with the Father and at once offered to take a body and be crucified. In the act the Holy Spirit also offered to do the work of the Incarnation, with the same purpose of pleasing the Father, to cooperate to his sovereign will. And so you have  the plan of  redemption  in understanding   divine even before there were  world ...   one could say that, my Father, and since then  crucified
Jesus  means savior, but  also  ... crucified victim ... sacrifice. And the biggest mystery of Jesus die is that, without the will of the Father does not  have  world ... or  saving souls ... or ... or ... or Maria  Jesus . I will not  be  in your  heart, nor would cross, or you would save.
What  Jesus  as God wants, what the Father wants,  also  Jesus  WANT him as man. Father has given  Jesus dying on the precept that it has inspired in his heart  the desire to suffer for us , communicating  their own want loving with men.

If your children are sacrificed for you, with love and your love, you repugnant ?. You would be satisfactory ?.
And if this love, or painful acts, were offered by others, would you accept ?.
! The more my Father, if the same substance, the substance of love, only to be repaired, and without it there is no pardon. By this sacrifice my humanity in union of the Word, that repair is worthy ... ok ... and productive in favor of the guilty.
That internal pain in my heart was the glory of the Father in the sacrifice of the Son, but martyrdom  that exalted, sublimated it, crowned it, he did more creditor Father caresses  all charity par with his beloved Son and to man .

And since then, nothing honor both the Father and the painful love, love pain accepted and all naked self-interest, which glorifies itself as the salvific suffering of Jesus, which the Father himself put in the Heart  of Your Child  divine, this  offered by the Holy Spirit to His will for the salvation of the world.
As in the case of supreme martyrdom where God himself reaches its witnesses the gift of faith, perseverance and triumph, or the ordinary life of the saints such as Teresa of Calcutta, where faith bears the fruit of the love, love the service and the service of peace.
WITH OR WITHOUT Martyrdom Martyrdom, IF WE ARE WITH CHRIST WILL COME TO THE CROSS OF CHRIST, FULLNESS LOVE AND OBEDIENCE TO THE FATHER.

Vatican II.
Only Christ in his humanity completely reveals the mystery of man: His  creation  in the Image and Likeness of God. The man is the key to understand himself contemplating "the divine prototype", the Incarnate Word, the eternal Son of the Father. Christ " is image of the invisible God " is the perfect man to reinstate the children of  Adam  that likeness to God deformed from the first sin.
According to  the doctrine of the Council, the dignity of man is not based  solely  on the fact of being a man, but above all , that God became man through Jesus Christ, The Son of God, his  incarnation , has joined in some fashion with every man.  In human nature been assumed, not  absorbed , so it  also  in us has been raised to a dignity.
The mystery of the Incarnate Word helps us to understand  also  the mystery of man in his dimension  historical : For Christ is the last  Adam , the Redeemer of the first  Adam , that is, man's  historical , loaded with the inheritance of original sin.  Crist  died  for all, and  the  vocation  of man is last one , the  vocation  God. Christ rose destroying death by death and gave us life, so as sons in the Son , cry out in the  Spirit : "Abba, Father!"

THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH.

You are Peter, the Rock upon which Jesus builds His Church (Matthew 16:18). You are Peter who comes to strengthen your brothers and sisters in faith (Luke 22:32).

We must never forget that the Church is built around Christ and as St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Albert the Great said, following St. Paul (cf.  1 Cor  10, 17), the Eucharist is the sacrament of the unity of the Church, because we are all one body, whose Head is the Lord. We must always remember the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, where we received the earnest of the mystery of our redemption on the cross. The Last Supper is the place where the womb containing the Church of all times the Church was born. In the Eucharist continually renews the sacrifice of Christ, Pentecost is renewed continuously. May all of you growing awareness of the importance of the Sunday Eucharist, because Sunday, the first day of the week is the day we honor Christ, the day we receive the strength to live each day the gift of God .

If the Word calls for the community, the Eucharist becomes a body: "Because there is St. Paul writes many, are one bread and one body, for we all partake of the one bread" ( 1 Cor  10, 17 .) Therefore, the Church is not the result of a sum of individuals, but a unity among those who feed on the Word of God and only the one Bread of Life . The communion and unity of the Church, born of the Eucharist, are a reality that we must increasingly aware, also when we receive Holy Communion; We must be ever more aware that we in unity with Christ, and so we become one with us . We must constantly learn to preserve and defend this unity of rivalries, jealousies and disputes which can arise within the church and between communities.

All the essentials of the Christian concept of  communion  are gathered in the famous passage from the First Letter of John, which can be considered the gold standard for any correct interpretation of Christian communion:  "What we have seen and heard I declare to you, so that you also may have fellowship with us . And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ ., we are writing this that our joy may be complete " ( 1 John  1: 3).
The first thing you can note that text is the starting point of communion:  the encounter with the Son of God, Jesus Christ, reaches men through the proclamation of the Church. Goldwyn communion of men with each other , which, in turn, is based on communion with the Triune God.

Each time we participate in the Holy Mass and nourish us the Body of Christ,  the presence of Jesus and the Holy Spirit works in us , fills our hearts and gives us inner attitudes that translate into behavior  according to the Gospel.

Communion with God is accessed through the realization of the communion of God with man, which is Christ in person ; the encounter with Christ creates communion with himself and therefore with the Father in the Holy Spirit , and from there, brings men together . All this is intended to perfect joy: the Church entails an eschatological dynamic.

In the expression "perfect joy" the reference to Jesus' farewell discourse is perceived and, consequently, the paschal mystery and the return of the Lord in the Easter appearances, which tends to full back in the new world : "You will worry, but your sorrow will turn into joy. (...) Again I will see, and your heart shall rejoice. (...) Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full "( Jn  16, 20, 22. 24). If the last sentence quoted compared with  Lk  11,13-the call to prayer at St Luke appears clear that "joy" and "Holy Spirit" are equivalent and, in 1 Jn 1.3, behind the word joy the Holy Spirit is hidden, without expressly mentioning.

So, from this biblical framework, the word  communion  has a theological, Christological, ecclesiological and historical-salvific character. Therefore, also holds the sacramental dimension, in St. Paul appears in a fully explicit: "The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ and the bread that we break, is it not the communion of? body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one bread ... " ( 1 Cor  10: 16-17).

Lumen Fidei.
In its final part, probably hand Pope Francisco, is a remarkable opening  of a pastoral nature , which fit into the previous pages heavily doctrinal. They are strongly firm that  the light of faith illuminates all dimensions of human life . At the end of the attitude is more modest:  "Faith is not a light that dispels all our darkness, but a lamp that guides our steps at night and that is enough for the road"  (n.57). With theological precision states that "the profession of faith is not assent to a set of abstract truths , but  make life into full communion with the living God "  (45).

He that believe, accepting the gift of faith, is transformed  into a  creature  new , get a new one, a subsidiary unless  child is in the Son . "Abba, Father" is the word most typical experience of Jesus that becomes the core of the Christian experience

What is the communion in the Church?
Cardinal Ratzinger. During the first letter of John we find a definition that offers a very complete view of communion San Juan said that what we have been given with faith, with He became a Christian, is above all communion with God, with God the Trinity, which in itself is communion. This is the beauty that gives us revelation: God is communion and therefore can give communion . The man, communion with God, into communion with all other men living in the same communion. Here are the vertical and horizontal lines and become one reality. Trinitarian God who is communion, makes broader and deeper human communion. Communion with Christ creates this bond between God and man. Such communion is embodied, so to speak, in the sacrament of the Eucharist, in which we joined the Lord's body. Thus is born the Church is a communion of communions , ie reality exists as Eucharistic.

'But this communion, does social consequences?
Cardinal Ratzinger: Certainly. Based on this foundation, in a theological concept of communion, a deeper social vision arises. God is God of all, and seeks Christ to all. Communion in Christ results in responsibility for others. The fact of being Christians, following Christ, there is the commitment to the good of all and the elimination of that which destroys the network of social relations.

Indeed, a church that exists only for itself is superfluous.  And people notice right away.  crisis of the Church , as reflected in the concept of God's people, is  "crisis of God" ,  derived from the abandonment of essentials . The only thing left is a power struggle. And that struggle and occurs in many parts of the world; for it does not need the Church.

Should return with these questions, the text of the Council itself. Immediately the first sentence of the Constitution on the Church makes clear that the Council  does not consider the Church as a reality closed in on itself ,  but from the looks of Christ . "Christ is the light of the nations So this sacred Council meeting in the Holy Spirit eagerly desires to enlighten all men with the light of Christ which shines out visibly from the Church "( Lumen gentium , 1). In the background there is seen the image present in the theology of the Fathers, that  the Church sees the moon, which itself does not have its own light, but reflects the sunlight, Christ . So ecclesiology appears as dependent Christology linked to it.  But since no one can speak correctly of Christ, the Son, not to speak while the Father; and since you can not speak properly the Father and the Son without attentive listening of the Holy Spirit , the Christological vision of the Church is necessarily widens into a Trinitarian ecclesiology (cf.  ibid.,  2-4).

The discourse on the Church is a discourse about God, and only thus is correct.  Trinitarian In this opening, which provides the key to a correct reading of the entire text, we learn, from concrete historical achievements, and in all of them, what the Church is  one, holy , which means  "universal Church ". This is even clearer when on the internal dynamism of the Church shown to the kingdom of God. The Church, precisely because it has been understood theologically,  it transcends itself: it is the meeting for the kingdom of God breaking into it.

So very well said Benedict XVI on the last day of his pontificate.
The Church "is not an institution invented and built in theory ... but a living ... He lives over time actually becoming, like all living things, transforming ... But nature always remains the same, and his heart is Christ " . has been our experience yesterday, I think, in the square: that the Church is a living body, animated by the Holy Spirit and truly lives by the power of God.  She is in the world , but not of the world is God, Christ, the Spirit.
We saw yesterday. For this is true and also other famous eloquent expression Guardini. «The Church awakens souls"  The Church lives, grows and awakens souls, like the Virgin Mary to accept the Word of God and the conceived by the Holy Spirit ;  offer God's own flesh and precisely in his poverty and humility,  become capable of generating Christ in the world today.  Throughout the Church, the mystery of the Incarnation remains present forever.  Christ is walking through the times and all places. (Pope Benedict XVI, the Cardinals, February 28, 2013)

He found the God of grace in the gospel of Jesus Christ. *

* (El mystery of the mercy of God revealed in Christ's sacrifice on the cross.  :  That rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith we love having died for our sins, God quickened us, raised us and made us sit together in heaven with Christ) ..

"When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said 'Repent , 'He called for the entire life of believers to be one of repentance. " So reads the opening statement of Luther's 95 Theses in 1517, sparking the Reformation movement.

Lutherans and Catholics Christians take seriously want to turn our critical look first at ourselves and not at each other. T e have to confess openly that we have been guilty BC damaging the unity of the church.  "Things that unite us are greater than those that divide us.".

Many Catholics associate the word "reform" first with the division of the church, while many Lutheran Christians associate the word "reform", mainly with the rediscovery of the Gospel, the certainty of faith and freedom.

The next step for the Catholic Luther research was to find similar content in different integrated structures and systems of theological thought.

Scripture and tradition
80 The Council, with the desire to preserve the "purity of the gospel purged of all errors," approved the decree on the sources of revelation on April 8, 1546 Without explicitly naming the Council rejected the principle of  sola Scriptura  , arguing against the isolation of Scripture from tradition. The Council decreed that the gospel, "the source of all the truth of salvation and the rule of conduct," was preserved "in books written and unwritten traditions", however, the resolution of the relationship between Scripture and tradition. He also taught that the apostolic traditions concerning faith and morals are "preserved in unbroken sequence in the Catholic Church." Scripture and tradition were accepted "with a sensation of piety and reverence." (20)
81 The decree published a list of the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments. (21) The Council insisted that Scripture can neither be interpreted as contrary to the teaching of the Church or against the "unanimous teaching of the Fathers" of the church. Finally, the Council stated that the old Latin Vulgate edition of the Bible was a "real" text for use in the church. (22)
Justificación
82 As justification, the Council explicitly rejected both the Pelagian doctrine of works righteousness and doctrine of justification by faith alone (sola fide) , while the understanding of faith primarily as assent to revealed doctrine. The Council affirmed the Christological basis of the justification for the claim that human beings are grafted into Christ and the grace of Christ is necessary for all the justification process , but the process does not preclude provisions for grace or the collaboration of free will.  stated the essence of justification that no remission of sins alone, but also the "sanctification and renewal of the inner man" by supernatural charity. (23) The formal cause of justification is "the righteousness of God, not that whereby He Himself is just, but that whereby He makes us righteous, "and the final cause of justification is" the glory of God and of Christ and eternal life. "(24) Faith it was stated as "the beginning, the foundation and root" of justification. (25) The grace of justification can be lost by mortal sin, not only for the loss of faith, although it can be recovered through Sacrament of Penance. (26) The Council stated that eternal life is a gift, not just a reward. (27)

The Sacraments
83 At its seventh session, the Council presented the sacraments as ordinary means by which "all true justice either begins or after receiving strength gains, or, if lost, is restored. " (28) The Council decreed that Christ instituted seven sacraments and define them as efficacious signs of grace cause the rite itself (ex opere operato) and not simply for the sake of the faith of the recipient.
84 The debate on communion under both species express the doctrine received under either species entirely and undivided Christ. (29) After the conclusion of the Council (16 April 1565), the Pope authorized the chalice to the laity under certain conditions by various ecclesiastical provinces of Germany and the Habsburg hereditary lands.
85 In response to criticism of the sacrificial character of the Mass for the reformers, the Council affirmed the Mass as a propitiatory sacrifice makes present the sacrifice of the cross.  The Council taught that, because in Christ the priest offers Mass same as sacrificial offerings on the cross, but in a different way , the Mass is not a repetition of the sacrifice once and for all at Calvary. The Council decided that the Mass can be offered in honor of the saints and the faithful, living and dead (30).
86 The decree on the sacred command defines the sacramental character of ordination and the existence of a hierarchy based on divine ordinance(31)

Pastoral reforms
87 The Council also initiated pastoral reforms. His decrees reform promoted a more effective proclamation of the Word of God through the creation of the best training seminars for priests and preaching by the demand for Sundays and holy days. Bishops and pastors were forced to reside in their dioceses and parishes. The Board removed some abuses competition, management, patronage, profit, and indulgences, while extended episcopal powers. Bishops were empowered to make parish visits exempt benefits and supervise the work of pastoral orders and free chapters. Expected provincial and diocesan synods.  To better communicate the faith, the Council encouraged the new practice of writing catechisms, as Peter Canisius, and states that the Roman Catechism.

Consecuencias
88 The Council of Trent, although largely a response to the Protestant Reformation, not condemn individuals or communities, but specific doctrinal positions. Because of the doctrinal decrees of the Council were largely in response to what is perceived as Protestant errors, a contentious atmosphere between Protestants and Catholics tended to define Catholicism over against Protestantism is formed. In this approach, which reflects many of the Lutheran confessional writings, which also define the Lutheran positions by the opposition. Decisions of the Council of Trent laid the groundwork for the formation of Catholic identity until Vatican II.
89 At the end of the third session of the Council of Trent, which had to be soberly recognized that the unity of the church in the Western world had been shattered. The new church structures develop in the Lutheran territories. The Peace of Augsburg of 1555 in the first guaranteed stable political relations, but could not prevent the great European conflict of the seventeenth century, the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). The establishment of secular nation-states with strong evocations confessionalistic had a burden of the Reformation period.

The Second Vatican Council
90 As the Council of Trent defined largely Catholic relations with Lutherans for centuries, his legacy must now be viewed through the lens of the actions of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). This Council made it possible to enter the Catholic Church in the ecumenical movement and leave behind the controversy-laden atmosphere of the period after the Reformation. Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (  Lumen Gentium  ), Decree on Ecumenism (  UR  ), the Declaration on Religious Freedom (  Dignitatis Humanae  ) and the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (  Dei Verbum  ) are key documents for ecumenism Catholic. Vatican II, while affirming that the Church of Christ subsists in the Catholic Church, he also acknowledged that "many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside its visible confines. These elements, as gifts belonging to the Church of Christ, are impel towards Catholic unity "(  LG  8). There was a positive assessment of what Catholics share with other Christian churches, as the creeds, baptism, and the Scriptures. A theology of ecclesial communion, said that Catholics are in a real union, although imperfect, communion with all who confess Jesus Christ and are baptized (  UR  2).

176 Catholic-Lutheran dialogue has identified numerous similarities as well as differences in theology and the institutional form of ordained offices, including the ordination of women, now practiced by many Lutheran churches. One of the outstanding issues is whether the Catholic Church recognizes the ministry of the Lutheran churches. Lutherans and Catholics Together can work the relationship between the responsibility of the proclamation of the Word and administration of the sacraments and the ordained office for this job. Together we can develop the distinctions between tasks as episkopé more local and regional offices.
Common understandings of ministry
Priesthood of the baptized
177 arises the question of how the specificity of the tasks are sorted properly established in relation to the universal priesthood of all baptized believers.  study Document  The apostolicity of the Church  says, "Catholics and Lutherans agree that all baptized believers in Christ, participating in the priesthood of Christ and therefore undertook to "proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2: 9).  It therefore none of its members lacking a role to play in the mission of the whole body "(  ApC  273).
Divine ministry source
178 understand the ordained office, there is a common belief in its divine origin: "Catholics and Lutherans affirm together that God instituted the ministry and is necessary for the welfare of the church, as the word of God and his public proclamation in word and sacrament are necessary to faith in Jesus Christ to arise and be preserved, along with this for the church to come into existence and retain as believers who make up the body of Christ in the unity of the faith "(  ApC  276 ).
Ministry of the Word and sacraments
. 179  The apostolicity of the Church  identifies the fundamental task of ordained ministers, both Lutherans and Catholics as the proclamation of the Gospel: "Ordained ministers have a specific task within the mission of the church as a whole" (  ApC  274 ) .Both for Catholics and Lutherans "the duty and the fundamental intention ordained ministry is the public service of the Word of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that the triune God has entrusted the church to proclaim to all the world. Each office and every public office should be measured against this obligation "(  ApC  274).
180 This emphasis on ministerial task of proclaiming the gospel is common to Catholics and Lutherans (cf.  ApC  247, 255, 257, 274). Catholic locate the origin of priestly ministry in proclaiming the gospel. The Decree on the priests (  Presbytero- Ordinis  ) states. "God's people is one way in the first place, by the word of God, who is expected to reason from the mouth of the priests Well since no one can be saved before if you do not believe, is the first task of priests as collaborators of the bishops to preach the Gospel of God to all "(  PO  4 cited in  ApC  247). "Catholicism also states that it is the task of ordained ministers to gather God's people, along with the word of God and proclaim it to all that they may believe" (  ApC  274). Similarly, the Lutheran interpretation is that "the ministry has its bases and criteria in the task of communicating the gospel to the  whole congregation convincingly that the warrant of faith is awakened and makes possible "(  ApC 255).
181 Lutherans and Catholics also agree on the leadership responsibility ordered by the administration of the sacraments. Lutherans say, "The gospel gives the presiding church commission to proclaim the Gospel, forgive sins and administer the sacraments" (  ApC  274). (68) also states that Catholic priests were in charge of administering the sacraments, which they consider to be "linked to the Eucharist" and directed to him as "the source and summit of all evangelization" (  PO  5, quoted in  ApC  274)
182.  's apostolicity of the Church  further comment, "it is worth noting the similarity between the descriptions of the ministerial functions of priests and bishops. Same pattern office- triple preaching, liturgy, leadership-used for bishops and priests, and the actual life of the Church, namely, the latter carry out the ordinary exercise of these functions through which the church is built, while the bishops have supervision on teaching and care fellowship among the local communities. Yet priests minister in subordination to the bishops in communion with them "(  ApC 248).
Rite of Ordination
183 With respect to induction in this special office, there is the next match, "Induction of this ministry is carried out by the management, in which the Christian is called and commissioned, by prayer and the laying on of hands, for the ministry of public preaching of the gospel in word and sacrament. Such prayer is an appeal by the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit, made sure to be heard "(  APC  277).
Local and regional Ministry
184 Lutherans and Catholics can say together that differentiation of office "in a more local and a regional office arises from the need of the intention and the work of the ministry to be a ministry of unity in the faith" (  ApC  279 ). In the Lutheran churches, the task of  episkopé  is perceived in different ways. Those who exercise supra-ministry in places designated by the titles that are not "Bishop" such as, éforo, church president, superintendent, or synod pastor. Lutherans understand that the ministry of  episkopé  also exercised not only individually, but also in other forms, such as synods, in which both ordained and non-ordained members participate together. (69)
Apostolicity
185 Even though Catholics and Lutherans perceive their ministerial structures to transmit the apostolicity of the Church differently, okay, "fidelity to apostolic gospel has priority in the interaction of  traditio  ,  successio  and  communio  "(  ApC  291). Both agree, "the apostolic church is based on fidelity to the apostolic gospel" (  ApC 292). This agreement has consequences for the Roman Catholic recognition that individuals "who hold office of supervision in the Roman Catholic Church is carried out by the bishops" also "have a special responsibility for the apostolicity of doctrine in their churches" and therefore can not be excluded from "the circle of those whose consensus is according to the Catholic see the sign of the apostolicity of doctrine" (  ApC  291).
The service to the universal Church
186 Lutherans and Catholics agree that the ministry serves the universal church. Lutherans' presuppose that the congregation gathered for worship is an essential relation to the universal Church, "and that this relationship is intrinsic to the congregation that worships, is not something added to it (  ApC  285). Although the Catholic bishops "exercise their pastoral office over the portion of the People of God committed to their care, and not over other churches nor over the universal Church," each bishop has the obligation to be "solicitous for the Church" (  LG  23). The Bishop of Rome by virtue of his office is "pastor of the whole Church" (  LG  22).

Differences in understanding of ministry
The Episcopate
187 significant differences with respect to the understanding of ministry in the church remain . 's apostolicity of the Church  recognizes that Catholic Bishops is the full form of ordained ministry and therefore the starting point for theological interpretation of the ministry of the church. The document cites  Lumen Gentium  21: "The holy synod teaches, moreover, that the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders is conferred by episcopal consecration ... [which] gives, together with the office of sanctifying, also the offices of teaching and the ruler, however, by its very nature can only be played in hierarchical communion with the head and members of the university "(quoted in  ApC  243).

188 The Second Vatican Council affirmed his understanding "that the bishops have by divine institution taken the place of the apostles as pastors of the Church, so that the listener is listening to Christ and whoever rejects them rejects Christ and Him who sent Christ "(  LG  20). However, Catholic doctrine is "an individual bishop is  not  in apostolic succession by his being part of a historically verifiable and uninterrupted chain of laying on of hands by his predecessors to one of the apostles, "but is" in communion the whole order of bishops as a whole succeeds the apostolic college and its mission "(  ApC  291).

189 This perspective on the ministry, which begins with the episcopate, represents a change from the Council of Trent on the approach of the priesthood and stresses the importance of the theme of apostolic succession, although  Lumen Gentium  said the ministerial aspect of this succession without denying the doctrine, missionaries, and existential dimensions of apostolic succession ( APC  240). For this reason, the local Catholic church identified with the diocese, taking into account the essential elements of the church to be word, sacrament, and apostolic ministry in the person of the bishop (  ApC  284).
Priesthood
190 Catholics Lutherans differ in their interpretation of sacramental identity of the priest and the relationship of the sacramental priesthood in the priesthood of Christ. They claim that priests are "partakers in a special way in the priesthood of Christ and, by performing sacred functions, act as ministers who through his Spirit continually exercises his priestly role for our benefit in the liturgy "(  PO  5).
Fullness of sacramental sign

191 For Catholics, Lutherans ordinations lack a fullness of sacramental sign. In Catholic doctrine, "the practice and doctrine of apostolic succession in the episcopate, together with the threefold ministry, part of the complete structure of the church. This sequence is done in a corporate way bishops are taken in the association of Catholic bishops and therefore have the power to order. therefore is also Catholic doctrine in Lutheran churches in the sacramental sign of ordination are not fully present, because the ordering does not act in communion with the school Catholic Bishops. therefore Vatican II speaks of a  sacramenti defectus Ordinis  (  UR  22) in these churches "(  ApC  283). (70)
Worldwide Ministry

192 Finally, Catholics and Lutherans differ both in offices and authorities of ministry and leadership beyond the regional level. For Catholics, the Pope has "full, supreme and universal power over the Church" (  LG  22).  's College of Bishops also has supreme and full power over the universal Church "together with its head the Roman Pontiff, and never without this head "(  LG  22).  's apostolicity of the Church  points out diverse opinions among Lutherans in relation to "the competence of leadership bodies above the level of the particular churches and the binding force of its decisions" (  APC  287).

Consideraciones
193 In the dialog that has often been pointed out that the relationship between bishops and priests in the early sixteenth century was not understood as it was later by the Second Vatican Council. Therefore, priestly ordination at the time of the Reformation must be considered with reference to the conditions of that period. It is also significant that the tasks of Catholics and Lutherans public office have largely corresponded with each other.
194 In the course of history, the Lutheran ministerial office has been able to fulfill its task of keeping the Church in truth for almost five hundred years after the beginning of the Reformation was possible to declare a Catholic-Lutheran agreement on the truths fundamentals of the doctrine of justification. If, according to the judgment of the Second Vatican Council, the Holy Spirit uses the "ecclesial communities" as means of salvation, it would seem that this work of the Spirit would have implications for some kind of mutual recognition of ministry. Therefore, the ministry office has both considerable obstacles for common understanding and encouraging prospects for rapprochement. (71)
Luther's understanding of Scripture, its interpretation, and human traditions
195 The controversy erupted regarding the spread of ninety-five theses on indulgences Luther quickly raised the issue that the authorities can turn to in a time of struggle. The papal theologian Sylvester Prierias court argued in his first response to Luther's theses on indulgences: "He who does not hold the doctrine of the Roman Church and the Pope as an infallible rule of faith of the Holy Scripture also derives its power and authority: he is a heretic "(72) and John Eck responded to Luther:" .. The Scripture is not authentic without the authority of the Church "(73) The conflict quickly grew from a dispute about doctrinal matters (the correct understanding of indulgences, penance and absolution) to a question of authority in the church. In case of conflict between the various authorities, Luther could consider only the Scriptures as the final judge as it had proven to be an effective and powerful authority, while other authorities only drew their power from it.
196 Luther regard Scripture as the first principle (  principium primum  ) (74) in which all theological assertions directly or indirectly, must be connected to tierra.Como teacher, preacher, counselor and conversation partner, practiced theology a coherent and complex interpretation of Scripture. He was convinced that Christians and theologians should not only fulfill the Scripture, but live and stay in it. He called it "the matrix of God in which we conceived, leads us and gives us light." (75)
197 The right way to study theology is, as Luther, a three-step process of  oratio [prayer],  meditatio  [meditation],  tentatio  [affliction or trial]. (76) Asking the Holy Spirit to be a teacher, one must read Scripture in the presence of God in prayer, and meditating on the words of the Bible, be aware of the situations in life that often seem to contradict what it is there. Through this process, Scripture demonstrates his authority by overcoming these afflictions. As Luther said, "Note that the strength of Scripture is this, that is not changed in studying, but loves transforms itself and its strength." (77) In this experiential context it is obvious that a person not only interprets Scripture, but is interpreted by him, and this is demonstrating its power and authority.
198 Scripture bears witness to God's revelation; therefore, a theologian should carefully follow how the revelation of God is expressed in the biblical books (  modus loquendi Scripturae  ). Otherwise, God's revelation would not be taken fully into account.  The multiple voices of Scripture are integrated into a whole by reference to Jesus Christ: "Taking Christ of the Scriptures, and what else will find them "(78) Therefore" what instills Christ "(  was Christum treibet  ) is the standard to address the problem of canonicity and limits of the canon.  It is a standard developed from Scripture itself and in some cases apply critically to particular books, like the letter of James.
199 Luther himself only rarely the expression "uses  sola Scriptura  . "His main concern was that nothing could claim a superior authority to Scripture, and turned with the utmost severity against any person or thing altered or displaced statements Scripture. But even when he asserted the authority of Scripture alone, did not read Scripture alone, but with reference to particular contexts and in relation to the Christological and Trinitarian confession of the early church, which he expresses the intent and meaning of Scripture .He continued to learn the Scriptures through the Small and Large Catechisms, which he regarded as brief summaries of Scripture, and practiced his performance with reference to the church fathers, especially Augustine. He also made extensive use of previous interpretations and used every tool available humanist philology. He carried out his interpretation of Scripture in direct discussions with the theological conceptions of his time and those of previous generations. His reading of the Bible was based on experience and practice constantly within the community of believers.
203 During the following centuries, however, there was a tendency to isolate teaching as a binding interpretive authority other theological loci. Ecclesiastical traditions were sometimes confused with the apostolic traditions and therefore treated as equivalent sources of materials for the Christian faith. There was also a reluctance to acknowledge the possibility of criticizing ecclesiastical traditions. The theology of Vatican II, as a whole, has a more balanced view of the various authorities in the church and the relationship between Scripture and tradition. In  DV  10, a masterful first text states that the teaching office of the Church is "not above the Word of God, but is at your service."
204 The role of Scripture in the life of the church is strongly emphasized when the Second Vatican Council says: "The strength and power of the word of God is so great that the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for their children, food for the soul, the pure and everlasting source of spiritual life "(  DV  21). (81) Therefore, the faithful are admonished to practice reading Scripture, in which God speaks to them, accompanied by prayer (  DV  25).
205 ecumenical dialogue helps Lutherans and Catholics reach a more differentiated view of different reference points and authorities involved in the process of realization of what the Christian faith and how to shape the life of the church .

The Catholic-Lutheran dialogue on Scripture and tradition
206 Following the biblical renewal that inspired the Dogmatic Constitution  Dei Verbum  of Vatican II, a new ecumenical understanding of the role and importance of Scripture has become possible.  ecumenical document As the  apostolicity of the Church  states, " Catholic doctrine, therefore, does not hold that the fears of Reformation theology and wants at all costs to avoid, namely, a derivation of biblical authority as canonical and binding authority of the church hierarchy disclosing the canon "( ApC  400).
207 convictions in dialogue, Catholics have stressed they have in common with the Reformation, and the effectiveness of the biblical text inspired by the Spirit "in the transmission of revealed truth that forms the minds and hearts, as stated on 2 Tim. 3:17 and declared by Vatican II (  DV  21-25) "(  ApC  409). Catholics add, "this is operating effectively in the church over time, not just individual believers, but also in the Church's tradition, both in high-level doctrinal expressions, such as the rule of faith, creeds, and conciliar teaching, and major structures of public worship ... Writing has been present in the tradition, therefore is able to play an essential role hermeneutic. Vatican II says that the tradition leads to new truths beyond Scripture, but also conveys certainty about revelation attested by Scripture "(  ApC  410).
208 A fruit of ecumenical dialogue to Lutheran theology is its openness to the Catholic belief that the effectiveness of Scripture is at work not only in individuals but also in the church as a whole. Evidence of this lies in the role of the Lutheran Confessions Lutheran churches.
Scripture and tradition
209 Today, therefore, means the role and importance of Scripture and tradition differently in the Roman Catholic Church than they were theological opponents of Luther.  Regarding the question of the true interpretation of Scripture, Catholics have explained, "When Catholic doctrine maintains that the 'judgment of the church" has a role in the authentic interpretation of Scripture, which does not attribute to the Magisterium of the Church's monopoly of interpretation, which advocates Reformation rightly fear and reject. Before the Reformation, the main figures had indicated ecclesial plurality of interpreters ... When Vatican II speaks of the church that has a 'final judgment' (  DV  12) clearly prevents a monopoly demand that teaching is the only organ interpretation, which is confirmed by the official promotion centennial of Catholic biblical scholarship and recognition as  DV  12 the role of exegesis in the maturation of the teaching of the magisterium "(  ApC  407).
210 Therefore, Lutherans and Catholics together are able to conclude, "Therefore as Scripture and tradition, Lutherans and Catholics are an extensive agreement so that their different emphases themselves require no maintenance the current division of the churches. In this area, there is unity in reconciled diversity "(  ApC  448). (82)

Looking ahead: The Gospel and the church
211 Besides giving Catholics a better understanding of the theology of Martin Luther, ecumenical dialogue, along with the historical and theological research, both Lutherans and Catholics gives a better mutual understanding of the doctrines of others, of their main points agreement and the problems that still need ongoing conversation. The Church has been a major issue in these discussions.
212 The nature of the Church was controversial at the time of the Reformation. The main issue was the relationship between the saving action of God and the Church, which both receives and communicates the grace of God in the Word and sacraments.  relationship between the gospel and the church was the subject of the first phase of the international dialogue Lutheran-Roman Catholic.  Malta Due to this report, as well as many subsequent ecumenical documents, it is possible today to better understand the Lutheran and Catholic positions and to identify both common understandings and issues for further consideration.
The church in the Lutheran tradition
213 In the Lutheran tradition, the church is understood as "the assembly of saints in which the pure gospel and the sacraments are rightly administered are taught" (CA VII). This means that the spiritual life is centered on the local congregation gathered around the pulpit and altar. This includes the size of the universal Church, as each individual congregation is connected to the others by preaching pure and proper celebration of the sacraments, for which the ministry is established in the church. Keep in mind that in his Large Catechism Luther called the church "the mother who begets and gives each Christian through the Word of God that the Holy Spirit reveals and proclaims ... The Holy Spirit will remain with the community santa [  Gemeine  ] or Christian people until the last day. Throughout she gets us to Christ and uses it to teach and preach the Word. "(83)
The church in the Catholic tradition
214 The teaching of the Second Vatican Council in  Lumen Gentium  is essential to understanding the Catholic Church. The Council Fathers explain the role of the church in the history of salvation in terms of sacramentality: "The Church is in Christ like a sacrament or sign and instrument of the union is very closely connected with God and of the unity of all mankind "(  LG  1).
215 A key to explain this sacramental understanding of the church concept is repeated in the notion of mystery and affirms the inseparable relationship between the visible and invisible aspects of the church. The parents of the Council teaches: "Christ, the one Mediator, established and continually sustains here on earth his holy Church, the community of faith, hope and charity, as an entity with visible delineation through which truth is communicated and But thanks to all the society endowed hierarchical organs and the Mystical Body of Christ should not be considered as two realities, nor are the visible assembly and the spiritual community, the earthly Church and the Church endowed with heavenly riches,., but form a complex reality, which binds from a divine and a human element "(  LG  8).
Towards consensu s
. 216 The Lutheran-Catholic conversations clear consensus has emerged that the doctrine of justification and the doctrine of the church go together  This common understanding is stated in the document  Church and Justification  : "Catholics and Lutherans together testify salvation is granted only in Christ and by grace and received by faith. They recite in common creed, confession of 'one Catholic and Apostolic Church. "Both the justification of sinners and the Church are the items fundamentals of the faith "(  Church and Justification  , 4).
. 217  Church and Justification  also states: "Strictly speaking, properly speaking, we do not believe in justification and in the Church, but the Father who has mercy on us and that we meet in the Church and his people, and in Christ, that we and whose body justifies Church. and the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us and dwells in the Church Our faith encompasses justification and the Church as the work of the triune God, who can be properly accepted only on faith in him "(  Church and Justification  , 5).
Although 218 documents  the Church and Justification  and  apostolicity of the Church  made important contributions to a number of unresolved issues between Catholics and Lutherans, more ecumenical conversation is still needed in the relationship between visibility and invisibility of the church, the relationship between the local and universal Church, the Church as sacrament, the need for management in the sacramental life of the church and the sacramental character of the episcopal consecration. Further discussion should take into account the important work already undertaken in these and other important documents. This task is as urgent as Catholics and Lutherans have never ceased to confess the faith together on the "one, holy, catholic and apostolic."

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI once remarked

Marriage is truly an instrument of salvation, not only for married people but for the whole of society. Like any truly worthwhile goal, it places demands upon us, it challenges us, it calls us to be prepared to sacrifice our own interests for the good of the other. It requires us to exercise tolerance and to offer forgiveness ( General Audience, May 5, 2010).

Francisco at the Angelus: Christian is sad to go soggy.

In the introduction to the Marian prayer, the Holy Father gives the keys to not be worldly Christians: Gospel, Eucharist and prayer

It is sad to go soggy Christians. That look like watered wine. And it is not known whether they are Christian or worldly. As the watered wine is not known if wine or water. This is sad. Sad to be Christians who are no longer salt of the earth. And we know that when the salt loses flavor, not useless. Salt has lost its taste because they have given to the spirit world. That is, they have become mundane.
Therefore it is necessary constantly renewed taking the Gospel wise. And how I can put this into practice? First reading and meditating on the Gospel every day, so that the word of Jesus is always present in our lives. Remember, it will help you always carry with you a Gospel, a little Gospel, in your pocket, purse. And read a passage during the day. But always with the gospel, because it is spread the word of Jesus. And you can read it.
Also participating in Sunday Mass, where we meet the Lord in the community, we hear His Word and receive the Eucharist unites us to Him and to one another; and then they are very important for spiritual renewal retreat days and retreats. Gospel, Eucharist and prayer. Do not forget. Gospel, Eucharist and prayer. Thanks to these gifts from the Lord we can not adjust to the world, but Christ, and follow him on his way, the way of "losing one's life" to find it. "Losing" in the sense donate, offer it in love and in love - and this leads to sacrifice, also the cross to receive further purified, freed from selfishness and mortgage of death, full of eternity. The Virgin Mary always precedes us in this way; let us guide and accompany her.

Chapter V
Called to Common Commemoration
We Broke communion on one side and on the other, we are in communion. But this rift does not keep us from trying to live the grace of baptism.

Baptism: The basis for unity and common commemoration
219. The church is the body of Christ. As there is only one Christ, so also he has only one body. Through baptism, human beings are made members of this body.
220. The Second Vatican Council teaches that people who are baptized and believe in Christ but do not belong to the Roman Catholic church “have been justified by faith in Baptism [and] are members of Christ’s body and have a right to be called Christian, and so are correctly accepted as brothers by the children of the Catholic Church” (UR 1.3).(84) Lutheran Christians say the same of their Catholic fellow Christians.
221. Since Catholics and Lutherans are bound to one another in the body of Christ as members of it, then it is true of them what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:26: “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” What affects one member of the body also affects all the others. For this reason, when Lutheran Christians remember the events that led to the particular formation of their churches, they do not wish to do so without their Catholic fellow Christians. In remembering with each other the beginning of the Reformation, they are taking their baptism seriously.
222. Because they believe that they belong to the one body of Christ, Lutherans emphasize that their church did not originate with the Reformation or come into existence only 500 years ago. Rather, they are convinced that the Lutheran churches have their origin in the Pentecost event and the proclamation of the apostles. Their churches obtained their particular form, however, through the teaching and efforts of the reformers. The reformers had no desire to found a new church, and according to their own understanding, they did not do so. They wanted to reform the church, and they managed to do so within their field of influence, albeit with errors and missteps.
Preparing for commemoration
223. As members of one body, Catholics and Lutherans remember together the events of the Reformation that led to the reality that thereafter they lived in divided communities even though they still belonged to one body. That is an impossible possibility and the source of great pain. Because they belong to one body, Catholics and Lutherans struggle in the face of their division toward the full catholicity of the church. This struggle has two sides: the recognition of what is common and joins them together, and the recognition of what divides. The first is reason for gratitude and joy; the second is reason for pain and lament.
224. In 2017, when Lutheran Christians celebrate the anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, they are not thereby celebrating the division of the Western church. No one who is theologically responsible can celebrate the division of Christians from one another.
Shared joy in the gospel
225. Lutherans are thankful in their hearts for what Luther and the other reformers made accessible to them: the understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ and faith in him; the insight into the mystery of the Triune God who gives Godself to us human beings out of grace and who can be received only in full trust in the divine promise; in the freedom and certainty that the gospel creates; in the love that comes from and is awakened by faith, and in the hope in life and death that faith brings with it; and in the living contact with the Holy Scripture, the catechisms, and hymns that draw faith into life. Remembrance and present commemoration will add additional reasons to be thankful to this list. This gratitude is what makes Lutheran Christians want to celebrate in 2017.
 226. Lutherans also realize that what they are thanking God for is not a gift that they can claim only for themselves. They want to share this gift with all other Christians. For this reason they invite all Christians to celebrate with them. As the previous chapter has shown, Catholics and Lutherans have so much of the faith in common that they can—and in fact should—be thankful together, especially on the day of commemoration of the Reformation.
227. This takes up an impulse that the Second Vatican Council expressed: “Catholics must gladly acknowledge and esteem the truly Christian endowments from our common heritage which are to be found among our separated brethren. It is right and salutary to recognize the riches of Christ and virtuous works in the lives of others who are bearing witness to Christ, sometimes even to the shedding of their blood. For God is always wonderful in His works and worthy of all praise” (UR 1.4).
Reasons to regret and lament
228. As the commemoration in 2017 brings joy and gratitude to expression, so must it also allow room for both Lutherans and Catholics to experience the pain over failures and trespasses, guilt and sin in the persons and events that are being remembered.
229. On this occasion, Lutherans will also remember the vicious and degrading statements that Martin Luther made against the Jews. They are ashamed of them and deeply deplore them. Lutherans have come to recognize with a deep sense of regret the persecution of Anabaptists by Lutheran authorities and the fact that Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon theologically supported this persecution. They deplore Luther’s violent attacks against the peasants during the Peasants’ War. The awareness of the dark sides of Luther and the Reformation has prompted a critical and self-critical attitude of Lutheran theologians towards Luther and the Wittenberg Reformation. Even though they agree in part with Luther’s criticism of the papacy, nevertheless Lutherans today reject Luther’s identification of the pope with the Antichrist.
Prayer for unity
230. Because Jesus Christ before his death prayed to the Father “that they may be one,” it is clear that a division of the body of Christ is opposed to the will of the Lord. It contradicts also the express apostolic admonition that we hear in Ephesians 4:3-6: be “eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” The division of the body of Christ is opposed to the will of God.
 Evaluating the past
231. When Catholics and Lutherans remember together the theological controversies and the events of the sixteenth century from this perspective, they must consider the circumstances of the sixteenth century. Lutherans and Catholics cannot be blamed for everything that transpired since some events in the sixteenth century were beyond their control. In the sixteenth century, theological convictions and power politics were frequently interwoven with one another. Many politicians often used genuine theological ideas to attain their ends, while many theologians promoted their theological judgments by political means. In this complex arena of numerous factors, it is difficult to ascribe responsibility for the effects of specific actions to individual persons and to name them as the guilty parties.
232. Sixteenth-century divisions were rooted in different understandings of the truth of the Christian faith and were particularly contentious since salvation was seen to be at stake. On both sides, persons held theological convictions that they could not abandon. One must not blame someone for following his or her conscience when it is formed by the Word of God and has reached its judgments after serious deliberation with others.
233. How theologians presented their theological convictions in the battle for public opinion is quite another matter. In the sixteenth century, Catholics and Lutherans frequently not only misunderstood but also exaggerated and caricatured their opponents in order to make them look ridiculous. They repeatedly violated the eighth commandment, which prohibits bearing false witness against one’s neighbor. Even if the opponents were sometimes intellectually fair to one another, their willingness to hear the other and to take his concerns seriously was insufficient. The controversialists wanted to refute and overcome their opponents, often deliberately exacerbating conflicts rather than seeking solutions by looking for what they held in common. Prejudices and misunderstandings played a great role in the characterization of the other side. Oppositions were constructed and handed down to the next generation. Here both sides have every reason to regret and lament the way in which they conducted their debates. Both Lutherans and Catholics bear the guilt that needs to be openly confessed in the remembrance of the events of 500 years ago.
Catholic confession of sins against unity
234. Already in his message to the imperial diet in Nuremberg on 25 November 1522, Pope Hadrian VI complained of abuses and trespasses, sins and errors insofar as church authorities had committed them. Much later, during the last century, Pope Paul VI, in his opening speech at the second session of the Second Vatican Council, asked pardon from God and the divided “brethren” of the East. This gesture of the pope found expression in the Council itself, above all in the Decree on Ecumenism85 and in the Declaration on Relationship of the Church to Non-Christian Religions (Nostra Acetate).(86)
235. In a Lenten sermon, “Day of Pardon,” Pope John Paul II similarly acknowledged guilt and offered prayers for forgiveness as part of the observance of the 2000 Holy Year.(87) He was the first not simply to repeat the regret of his predecessors Paul VI and the council fathers regarding the painful memories, but actually to do something about it. He also related the request for forgiveness to the office of bishop of Rome. In his encyclical Ut Unum Sint, he alludes to his visit to the World Council of Churches in Geneva on 12 June 1984, admitting, “the Catholic conviction that in the ministry of the bishop of Rome she has preserved in fidelity to the Apostolic Tradition and faith of the Fathers, the visible sign and guarantor of unity constitutes a difficulty for most other Christians, whose memory is marked by certain painful recollections.” He then added, “As far as we are responsible for these, I join with my predecessor Paul VI in asking forgiveness.”(88)
Lutheran confession of sins against unity
236. At its fifth Assembly in Evian in 1970, the Lutheran World Federation declared in response to a deeply moving presentation by Jan Cardinal Willebrands “that we as Lutheran Christians and congregations [are] prepared to acknowledge that the judgment of the Reformers upon the Roman Catholic Church and its theology was not entirely free of polemical distortions, which in part have been perpetuated to the present day. We are truly sorry for the offense and misunderstanding which these polemic elements have caused our Roman Catholic brethren. We remember with gratitude the statement of Pope Paul VI to the Second Vatican Council in which he communicates his plea for forgiveness for any offense caused by the Roman Catholic Church. As we together with all Christians pray for forgiveness in the prayer our Lord has taught us, let us strive for clear, honest, and charitable language in all our conversations.” (89)
237. Lutherans also confessed their wrongdoings with respect to other Christian traditions. At its eleventh Assembly in Stuttgart in 2010, the Lutheran World Federation declared that Lutherans “are filled with a deep sense of regret and pain over the persecution of Anabaptists by Lutheran authorities and especially over the fact that Lutheran reformers theologically supported this persecution. Thus, the Lutheran World Federation… wishes to express publicly its deep regret and sorrow. Trusting in God who in Jesus Christ was reconciling the world to himself, we ask for forgiveness—from God and from our Mennonite sisters and brothers—for the harm that our forbears in the sixteenth century committed to Anabaptists, for forgetting or ignoring this persecution in the intervening centuries, and for all inappropriate, misleading and hurtful portraits of Anabaptists and Mennonites made by Lutheran authors, in both popular and scholarly forms, to the present day.”(90)
Chapter VI
Five Ecumenical Imperatives
238. Catholics and Lutherans realize that they and the communities in which they live out their faith belong to the one body of Christ. The awareness is dawning on Lutherans and Catholics that the struggle of the sixteenth century is over. The reasons for mutually condemning each other’s faith have fallen by the wayside. Thus, Lutherans and Catholics identify five imperatives as they commemorate 2017 together.
239. Lutherans and Catholics are invited to think from the perspective of the unity of Christ’s body and to seek whatever will bring this unity to expression and serve the community of the body of Christ. Through baptism they recognize each other mutually as Christians. This orientation requires a continual conversion of heart.
The first imperative: Catholics and Lutherans should always begin from the perspective of unity and not from the point of view of division in order to strengthen what is held in common even though the differences are more easily seen and experienced.
240. The Catholic and Lutheran confessions have in the course of history defined themselves against one another and suffered the one-sidedness that has persisted until today when they grapple with certain problems, such as that of authority. Since the problems originated from the conflict with one another, they can only be solved or at least addressed through common efforts to deepen and strengthen their communion. Catholics and Lutherans need each other’s experience, encouragement, and critique.
The second imperative: Lutherans and Catholics must let themselves continuously be transformed by the encounter with the other and by the mutual witness of faith.
241. Catholics and Lutherans have through dialogue learned a great deal and come to appreciate the fact that communion among them can have different forms and degrees. With respect to 2017, they should renew their effort with gratitude for what has already been accomplished, with patience and perseverance since the road may be longer than expected, with eagerness that does not allow for being satisfied with the present situation, with love for one another even in times of disagreement and conflict, with faith in the Holy Spirit, with hope that the Spirit will fulfill Jesus’ prayer to the Father, and with earnest prayer that this may happen.
The third imperative: Catholics and Lutherans should again commit themselves to seek visible unity, to elaborate together what this means in concrete steps, and to strive repeatedly toward this goal.
 242. Catholics and Lutherans have the task of disclosing afresh to fellow members the understanding of the gospel and the Christian faith as well as previous church traditions. Their challenge is to prevent this rereading of tradition from falling back into the old confessional oppositions.
The fourth imperative: Lutherans and Catholics should jointly rediscover the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ for our time.
243. Ecumenical engagement for the unity of the church does not serve only the church but also the world so that the world may believe. The missionary task of ecumenism will become greater the more pluralistic our societies become with respect to religion. Here again a rethinking and metanoia are required.
The fifth imperative: Catholics and Lutherans should witness together to the mercy of God in proclamation and service to the world.
244. The ecumenical journey enables Lutherans and Catholics to appreciate together Martin Luther’s insight into and spiritual experience of the gospel of the righteousness of God, which is also God’s mercy. In the preface to his Latin works (1545), he noted that “by the mercy of God, meditating day and night,” he gained new understanding of Romans 1:17: “here I felt that I was altogether born again and had entered paradise itself through open gates. Thereupon a totally other face of the entire Scripture showed itself to me… Later I read Augustine’s The Spirit and the Letter, where contrary to hope I found that he, too, interpreted God’s righteousness in a similar way, as the righteousness with which God clothes us when he justifies us.”(91)
245. The beginnings of the Reformation will be rightly remembered when Lutherans and Catholics hear together the gospel of Jesus Christ and allow themselves to be called anew into community with the Lord. Then they will be united in a common mission which theJoint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification describes: “Lutherans and Catholics share the goal of confessing Christ in all things, who alone is to be trusted above all things as the one Mediator (1 Tim. 2:5f) through whom God in the Holy Spirit gives himself and pours out his renewing gifts” (JDDJ 18).

The family in Gods salvific plan

     15.        Since, by their commitment to mutual acceptance and with the grace of Christ couples promise fidelity to one another and openness to life, they acknowledge as constitutive elements of marriage the gifts God offers them, taking their mutual responsability seriously, in His name and before the Church. Now, in faith it is possible to assume the goods of marriage as commitments best maintained with the help of the grace of the sacrament. God consecrates love between spouses and confirms its indissolubility, offering them help in living in fidelity and openness to life. Therefore, the gaze of the Church turns not only to the couple, but to the family.
     16.        We are able to distinguish three fundamental phases in the divine plan for the family: the family of origins, when God the creator instituted the primordial marriage between Adam and Eve, as a solid foundation for the family: he created them male and female (cg. Gn 1,24-31; 2,4b); the historic family, wounded by sin (cf. Gn 3) and the family redeemed by Christ (cf. Eph 5,21-32), in the image of the Holy Trinity, the mystery from which every true love springs. The sponsal covenant, inaugurated in creation and revealed in the history of God and Israel, reaches its fullest expression with Christ in the Church.
The discernment of values present in wounded families and in irregular situations
     17.        In considering the principle of gradualness in the divine salvific plan, one asks what possibilities are given to married couples who experience the failure of their marriage, or rather how it is possible to offer them Christ’s help through the ministry of the Church. In this respect, a significant hermeneutic key comes from the teaching of Vatican Council II, which, while it affirms that “although many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside of its visible structure ... these elements, as gifts belonging to the Church of Christ, are forces impelling toward Catholic unity” (Lumen Gentium, 8).
     18.        In this light, the value and consistency of natural marriage must first be emphasized. Some ask whether the sacramental fullness of marriage does not exclude the possibility of recognizing positive elements even the imperfect forms that may be found outside this nuptial situation, which are in any case ordered in relation to it. The doctrine of levels of communion, formulated by Vatican Council II, confirms the vision of a structured way of participating in the Mysterium Ecclesiae by baptized persons.
     19.        In the same, perspective, that we may consider inclusive, the Council opens up the horizon for appreciating the positive elements present in other religions (cf. Nostra Aetate, 2) and cultures, despite their limits and their insufficiencies (cf.Redemptoris Missio, 55). Indeed, looking at the human wisdom present in these, the Church learns how the family is universally considered as the necessary and fruitful form of human cohabitation. In this sense, the order of creation, in which the Christian vision of the family is rooted, unfolds historically, in different cultural and geographical expressions.
     20.        Realizing the need, therefore, for spiritual discernment with regard to cohabitation, civil marriages and divorced and remarried persons, it is the task of the Church to recognize those seeds of the Word that have spread beyond its visible and sacramental boundaries. Following the expansive gaze of Christ, whose light illuminates every man (cf. Jn 1,9; cf.Gaudium et Spes, 22), the Church turns respectfully to those who participate in her life in an incomplete and imperfect way, appreciating the positive values they contain rather than their limitations and shortcomings.
Truth and beauty of the family and mercy
     21.        The Gospel of the family, while it shines in the witness of many families who live coherently their fidelity to the sacrament, with their mature fruits of authentic daily sanctity must also nurture those seeds that are yet to mature, and must care for those trees that have dried up and wish not to be neglected.
     22.        In this respect, a new dimension of today’s family pastoral consists of accepting the reality of civil marriage and also cohabitation, taking into account the due differences. Indeed, when a union reaches a notable level of stability through a public bond, is characterized by deep affection, responsibility with regard to offspring, and capacity to withstand tests, it may be seen as a germ to be accompanied in development towards the sacrament of marriage. Very often, however, cohabitation is established not with a view to a possible future marriage, but rather without any intention of establishing an institutionally-recognized relationship.
            23.        Imitating Jesus’ merciful gaze, the Church must accompany her most fragile sons and daughters, marked by wounded and lost love, with attention and care, restoring trust and hope to them like the light of a beacon in a port, or a torch carried among the people to light the way for those who are lost or find themselves in the midst of the storm.

Political institutions are secular by definition and operate in independent spheres. All my predecessors have said the same thing, for many years at least, albeit with different accents. I believe that Catholics involved in politics carry the values of their religion within them, but have the mature awareness and expertise to implement them. The Church will never go beyond its task of expressing and disseminating its values, at least as long as I’m here.”

FRANCISCO
